IMPORTANT VIENNESE FORTEPIANO BUILDERS

This is not an exhaustive list — there were hundreds of fortepiano builders in Vienna during the 18th century.

Johann Andreas Stein (1728-1792)

  • Inventor of the “Viennese” action

  • Praised by Mozart and Beethoven

  • Mozart owned a Stein piano from 1777 until ca. 1782

  • Father of Nannette Streicher

Anton Walter (1752 - 1826)

  • Arguably the most famous builder

  • Pianos were praised by Beethoven and Mozart

  • Mozart owned a Walter piano from ca. 1782 until his death

  • Disliked by Joseph Haydn (found the action too heavy)

Johann Schantz (1762-1828)

  • Ran a workshop with his brother

  • Haydn’s favorite pianos

  • Praised by Beethoven as “ideal for my [Moonlight] Sonata”

Nannette Streicher (née Stein)
1769 - 1833

  • Took over her father’s workshop

  • Close friend and ardent supporter of Beethoven

  • Beethoven praised her instruments

  • Built wonderful early-Romantic pianos that are ideal for Schubert and late Beethoven

Conrad Graf (1782 - 1851)

  • Built late Classical and Romantic pianos

  • Used by Beethoven, Chopin, and the Schumanns.

Paul McNulty (1953 - )

  • Builder of the finest historical reproductions

  • Used in concerts and recordings worldwide

  • Built my Anton Walter copies

HISTORICAL TREATISES

The following treatises discuss performance practices during the 18th century. While the Leopold Mozart and Johann Joachim Quantz treatises aren’t about keyboard playing, they are still great sources about general Classical-era performance practices.
